I know you have been looking for a way to make money, and you ventured into Amazon KDP, or yet to. Truth is, this platform has made millions of ordinary independent publishers (and non-publishers) millionaires.

Estimates show that 191 million e-books were sold in the United States in 2020, according to the most recently available data. Sometimes we see ourselves complaining about not getting the expected result, or the same results others are getting, and in most cases, this is not because of the platform, or that the other person worked harder than you, it could be because you neglected an important part of the process, and now it’s hurting the whole effort.

Here, we are going to list five reasons (these reasons are not exhaustive) why your book is not making the expected sales:

1. YOU DID NOT MAKE PROPER RESEARCH ON THE SELF-PUBLISHING PROCESS

Self-publishing may be easier than finding a publisher to pick up your book, the steps may be easy, but that doesn’t make it simple.

If you fail to make appropriate, and adequate research for the self-publishing process, it can impact your sales, your reach, and ultimately, your royalty (money earned from selling books on Amazon).

Always make research the process thoroughly so you can have a clearer view of what’s ahead.

What should I research?

⚫ Your audience: It’s important to know and consider your reading audience throughout the entire self-publishing process. You’ll especially want to have them in mind during:

◼ Writing: Who is going to read your book? What topics or headlines will attract these readers? What type of words, keywords, and description will they resonate with?

◼ Production: Which medium will your readers prefer?

Physical copy? E-book? Audiobook?

◼ Marketing: What marketing platforms will reach your readers? How can you build a community with them?

In Kindle Direct Publishing, the cover design speaks a thousand words and could be the bridge between paying for your book or swiping the card for another book.

2. RUSHING THE EDITING PROCESS

Editing your book properly is even more important than writing it.

Don’t put yourself on the clock, and rush the editing process there leaving room for mistakes, typos, and wrong Kindle document formatting.

Many authors feel pressure to stay on their timeline and end up rushing the editing process in order to keep up.

Don’t do that.

If you wanna make sales, and also build a brand with a pen name (Kindle lets you use new names every time you publish), or your original name, always make sure your books are properly edited.

The truth is, poor editing can be very bad for your brand as an author. Your credibility will be called into question when you publish a book that wasn’t ready to be published.

I mentioned this in mistake one, and I’m reiterating it again. This is to show how important this variable is in converting, and making more sales for your Kindle.

Do you remember the popular saying; “Never judge the book by the cover?”

In Kindle publishing, it is the direct opposite, people have less than a second to judge you by the cover. It is only when they find it appealing, and relatable that will they click it to read the description, and also peep inside

(Kindle let the reader read a few pages of your book to decide if they wanna buy or not).

This is precisely why the publishing industry will drop thousands of dollars on photo shoots, illustrators, and focus groups to create dazzling book covers.

A great custom book cover can make the difference between a book that sells almost no copies, to a book that lands on the New York Times Best Seller list.

4. WRITING A CLICHE DESCRIPTION

You understand the process of self-publishing, you’ve spent ample time editing, and you even have a professionally designed book cover to match.

You’re ready to publish your book, right? Almost.

You’ll need to describe your book to your audience, tell them what they are expecting, and how your book speaks to their desires. Don’t make the mistake of so many self-publishing authors and rush or underestimate your book description.

THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR DESCRIPTION

Your description isn’t just a summary of your book – it’s an advertisement.

Aside from what we’ve talked about so far, the book description is so important it can determine how many copies that get sold per day, and also determines if you can make it to Amazon Best Seller in your niche. Like all advertisements, the goal is to influence the potential buyer into considering your product over another.

How Do I Write My Description

It’s best to approach writing your description with a plan. Here’s what I would advise:

⚫ Read the description of best-selling books in your niche: Amazon always lists best sellers in the entire store, then best sellers in a category, then best sellers in the subcategory, and best sellers in niches. Always make sure to read as many descriptions of successful books in your niche as you can. Ask yourself why they’re selling so well, and what it is about the description that entices readers.

⚫ Keep it short: A book description between 150-250 words (no more than three paragraphs) gives you adequate space to entice the reader while not giving away too much book content, or listing your table

of contents. While it’s important to include key elements, fewer words can hold the attention of the reader longer.

⚫ Write in the third person: The description of your book should be written in the third person. Remember, the book description is not a continuation of the text within – it’s an ad. So whenever you write, write in the third-person.

⚫ Keywords: Keywords are like hooks because these are words that resonate with your audience. Once people hear what they wanna hear, they pay their money for it. Insert good keywords in your description because they also allow search engines to find your book. So, begin compiling a list of relevant keywords throughout the writing and publishing process. Tools like Google Keyword Planner, Buzzsumo, and Answerthepublic are tools that I use to reveal how popular keywords are by volume. The higher the volume, the better.

5. WRITING LIKE A SLOTH

Sloths are very slow. You are probably thinking, you just asked me a few minutes ago to take my time in editing my book.” Yes, I did, and that is because it is very important. What if you could write 4 - 5 books in a week without writing a single word in it, would you publish more?The more you publish well-structured books, the more dollars you get paid by Amazon. This is where people are also struggling, they

just only rack their brains for content, which is a good thing, but there are strategies that you should use to publish more, and expect more.

You also need to be on social media. So, set up brand profiles on social media platforms. We suggest starting with Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Finding where your audience is on social media can be a matter of trial and error. Use social profiles to post book excerpts, updates on upcoming releases, and links to where your book can be purchased. This is if you want to go through that, and plan on building a brand around writing.
